Penhaligon Newsletter 22.04.16
Where did that week go? Another productive week by Penhaligon class. We have continued times-tables practice in maths. We have also used partitioning to support doubling and halving understanding.
E.g.23 x 2 = 46 46 ÷ 2 = 23
20 x 2 = 40 40 ÷ 2 = 20
3 x 2 =6 6 ÷ 2 = 3
40 + 6 = 46 20 + 3 = 23
In literacy we have read a couple of versions of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and finished our class reader ‘The Boy in a Dress’. We have written character descriptions of the main characters using descriptive phrases and adjectives. This will be reinforced in their home learning, along with tips for parental support. We have also looked at the use of the apostrophe for the possessive and contractions.
Our science investigations are under way. We are investigating the conditions of how cress grows best.
In PE we have played ‘scatter ball’ and we have also identified the teaching points for a good start in sprints and how to pass the baton in relay races. In computing we have continued perfecting our typing skills.
Spellings this week:
There are 20 spellings this week. The children have this many due to the similarity of the spellings. We have been studying ‘base words’ e.g. kind. We have applied our knowledge of prefixes and suffixes to make e.g. ‘unkind’, ‘kindness’ and‘unkindness’.
Stars of the Week:
Congratulations to Archie, Ciara and Evelyn. These children have responded excellently to feedback in their writing. They have written detailed character descriptions demonstrating good personal progress. Congratulations to Merryn for her continued excellent attitude to maximising every learning opportunity. Her Jack and the Beanstalk version of Snakes and Ladders typifies the extension she sets herself. Well done!
Thank you for bringing in egg shells. They have been very helpful for growing our crazy cress heads.
Have a lovely weekend, see you all again on Monday.
