At last! I've managed to log on! Well! What can I tell you about this this exciting project? First things first: I am delighted to be working in Cheswick Green with years 3 and 4. The planning sessions were very constructive and the idea of a piece of drama that related the tale of two groups or tribes, whose paths cross at the burial ground of their ancestors, was born. The children and staff have been full of creativity over this whole project and the ideas have come thick and fast.

I am working with each year group individually at the moment building their own part of the story. The settlers live in a village by the river and are farmers and growers. They honour their harvest each year at a ceremony on the burial mount of their first tribal chief. But this year, things are going to be different.........

In terms of building a dramatic narrative the children have had to learn some very basic drama techniques, i.e., using stillness and movement, use of space, levels, body and gesture. The whole piece is one that will be driven by the children collectively. They will decide the events of the story and what they say and do. The children have worked in groups or in threes within the class and generated ideas for discussion and to be played around with:
Experimented with, chopped and changed until we are happy with them. The whole process is very exciting because it is the birth of a whole new story and the children are creating it themselves. Both classes have not only had to generate their parts of the story, but they have had to be aware of what the other group have created; so the Year 3, as the settlers, have had to listen to the story created by the invaders, Year 4. This has been a good discipline for both groups.

Progress with both year groups has been excellent and the children have worked hard - collaborating, listening, making suggestions and creating little pieces of theatre that will fees into the whole. We are now well into the story, which I won't tell you, because it would spoil the performance! However, I will say that it is full of ingenuity and good story ideas. I can't wait until Friday to see where the story goes next!
