Wheat, grapes and olives were grew on
a Roman farm. Also, they grew local
crops which might be sold all over the
Roman Empire.
Roman farmers were careful to stay
on the right side of the gods. Each month
had it's own special religious
ritual. The farmers thought more of
these rituals than any other work
they did on the farm. At harvest
time offerings of fresh bread would
be placed in the fields for the gods to
eat.
These gods included :
Bacchus-god of wine
Ceres-goddess of corn (this is where our word cereal comes from)
Pales-goddess of flocks and shepherds
Pomona-goddess of fruit trees and fruit
Saturn-god of seed time and harvest
