Romangods

The Romans believed in god's and goddess such as
Jupiter - king of the god's
Juno - Jupiter's wife goddess of women
Mar's - the god of war
Minerva - the goddess of wisdom
Neptune- the god of the sea
Diana- the goddess of the moon and hunting
Murcury- the messenger of the god's
Venus- the goddess of love and beauty
Mithras- the sun god
Cupid- the god of love

Most of the god's are named after planets

Across their empire, there were many different religions. In the east of the Roman empire, in Palestine the people were Jewish and a man called Jesus lived. The Romans did not like Jesus because he believed in only one God. The followers of Jesus became known as Christians
, and at first the Romans banned them and treated them very badly. However after 300 years, Christianity spread over the entire empire and most people, including the Romans became Christians.

Messenger god

Before the Romans came to Britain the Celts had lots of different religions. The Romans brought a standard state religion with them, based on the belief that the Emperor would become a God when he died.
There were a lot of gods as Romans discovered new ones all the time. This happened as they travelled from country to country learning about them from the people they conquered. It could make things quite complicated. For example, a soldier going on a journey would need to ask Mercury the god of travel for help, as well as Mithras the special soldiers' god and he might also need to make a sacrifice at the temple of Neptune if he had to travel by sea!
