To make a samosa we need a filling and pastry. One recipe used the ingredients below as a vegetable samosa filling.
We need to work out the costs of making samosas. To do this we need the weights of the various ingredients. See if you can find, or estimate, the weights or volumes of the following items mentioned in the recipe, in grams or ml. Fill in the boxes and then send.

Teacher notes

This was developed to be used as part of work relating to 'Chembakolli'. Children were looking at instructions (see
NLS Flier) and were making samosas. The web recipe (unfortunately no longer active - but try a Google search on "making samosas") does not give weights of ingredients so and this gives the opportunities for children to do some weighing and estimating, either at school or home. The weights the children have measured can be recorded onto the web form and sent to the form results page.

When each child has completed the form all the results are automatically collated into one csv file. This can be saved and will allow us to validate the data by looking for results that are obviously 'wrong', possibly by sorting the columns of data in a spreadsheet and looking for values that are obviously too small or large. Graphs could also be plotted to see if some of the values are extreme when compared to the other results.

From this we can look at maximum and minimum values, average, mean etc. and agree what we mean by our average weight for a potato and each of the other ingredients. These values can then used in a spreadsheet to work out the costings for the samosas.

To use this file yourself

Load the page into the j2e editor by clicking on the link below:

http://www.j2e.com/mratcliffe/samosa/?edit

Sign into your j2e account or create one if you do not already have one.

Save the page and a copy of it will be created in your j2e account.

Delete the teacher notes (double click to select and then delete).

Save again - ensure that in the save dialogue box it is being saved as a web page (from the drop down menu) and that you select the radio button to "publish". Note that you will have access to the original and your edited version of the file by going to the revisions link at the right hand side of the button bar.

Give the children access to the page by giving them the URL of your page (without the ?edit at the end) or use a link from your website or VLE.

Accessing the collated data

Once the children have completed the web based form go to j2e and view your samosa page when you have signed into j2e. On the right hand side menu of the editor you will see a button "form results". Here you can view the results as a web page or save as CSV for later use in a spreadsheet or data base.
