Collection of Tokens

Over the last twelve months parents have been very thoughtful in collecting all types of tokens from supermarkets, stores ,etc. We are very appreciative of your efforts as we have been able to claim the following items through the redemption of these Tokens:

Books have been supplied for use in our classrooms and also for the library
P.E. equipment
A large amount of gardening tools

We are still collecting a variety of tokens and are always prepared to take used Ink Cartridges, as we have a re-cycling contact who will pay the school for them.

Thanks once again for your help.
 Dear Parents

This final newsletter of 2009 will give you on an idea of some of the activities that our children have been involved in this term. Thank you to all the parents who have supported the school in so many ways this year. It has really been appreciated. Please note term ends at 3.00 p.m. on Friday December 18th. School opens again on Tuesday 5th  January 2010.

On behalf of staff and governors at Stokes School, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Best wishes,
Chris Meadows.

The money raised has paid for the Christmas Pantomime, for Reception through to year 3, and the transport to take years 4, 5 and 6 to the Curve (total cost £700).  We also have sufficient funds to buy 10 digital cameras (£500) and 20 Stokes School running/athletics vests (£200).  Thanks to your generosity, your children can enjoy and make good use of these fun extras.

The next FOSS meeting will be on Monday, 11th January, 2010 in the Staffroom (Headlands Building), starting at 7.30pm, and is open to all adults associated with the school.  We will be discussing and organising the events for 2010 and deciding how best to spend the money raised.

 Christmas Productions  2009

 Christmas Grotto

Year 1 and 2’s production for 2009 was “Christmas Grotto”, which was absolutely wonderful! I am always amazed to see the many hidden talents our children possess which only become apparent when the children have the opportunity to perform in school productions and plays.

The performance was a really terrific effort this year as we had the Ofsted Inspection and also the Section 48 Inspection right in the middle of the rehearsal period. The productions were excellent,  the children sang wonderfully and the acting was first class.  The costumes of all of the children were spectacular and a big thank you to all of the adults who were involved in their manufacture. Well Done to all the children in Years 1 & 2.

The Year R (4+) Play “Mary’s Knitting”

The youngest children in school performed for their parents on the 8h December. The performance loosely followed the traditional Nativity story but with a few changes.  Thankfully everything worked out on the night (morning). The children sang really well and the performance was delightful.  It is hard to believe that these pupils have only been in school for just over three months and that many have had their learning disrupted by sickness.  A credit to both, your children and the staff of Stokes School.

Christmas 2009
On Friday the 27th November Stokes Hall was full of festive fun at the annual Christmas Fayre.  This year we managed to raise an amazing £1446.22, which is fantastic.  This would not have been possible without all your generous donations for the Secrets Room, Bottle and Cake Stalls; the hard work of the School staff and FoSS members; and those who came on the night:  a huge thank you to you all.

Parking outside School

Parking around school has been better recently although we are still receiving complaints from people living close to the school who have complained that they cannot get on to their drives due to the inconsiderate parking of some of our parents when they are collecting their children, this has been a particular problem on Auburn Road.

I was also contacted by a resident of the Charlotte Court Flats on Auburn Road who has informed me that at the end of the school day it is impossible to park in their own private car park as the spaces are occupied by parent’s cars. In future there is a likelihood that cars could be clamped if they are parked in the Charlotte Court Flats car park illegally.

Could I also ask drivers not to turn in the school gateway, particularly when children are leaving school, as we have been very close to an accident on one or two occasions.

Just to let you know......
Year R ( 4+ )
Staff in the Reception classes would appreciate any spare ribbons, bows, tinsel, etc you may have left over and you no longer require; they are extremely useful for art, craft and technology lessons.
Christmas Card Recycling
Please note that this year the County Council will again be running the Leicestershire Christmas Card recycling scheme through the school. When you have finished with your Christmas cards, please bring them in to school so they can be recycled.
*** Poppy Appeal ***
Thank you to everyone who supported the Royal British Legion 2009 Poppy Appeal.
Almost £50 was collected at school, which is almost the same amount as last year.

Chris Smith Race Walking League 2009/10 - Round 2
Blustery conditions around the country meant that only a handful of competitors in the second 2 km. race of this popular postal Race Walking League beat their personal bests.

In the girl’s race Jasmine Nicholls (Countesthorpe College) held off the fast finishing Emma Achurch (Leysland H.S.) – both are former Stokes Striders.  At the half way stage in the individual competition (38 girls competing so far) a handful of points separate Emma Achurch, Neve Duguid and Kezia Brown in 6th., 7th. and 8th. respectively.

In the boys race Joe Smith put in another fine performance to finish fourth. Max Flanagan (Blaby Stokes) is just a solitary point behind the second placed walker in the boys league (34 boys). He leads a posse of Stokes Striders – Jake Smith (4th.), Edward Poyser (5th.), Joe Smith (7th.) and Benjamin Allen (9th.)

Blaby Stokes Striders, the current Chris Smith league team champions, continue to show their strength in depth and have extended their lead in the team category.
STAR ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

At our special  achievement assembly, in December, the following children were presented with awards:-

Year R -  Keira March

Year 1  -  George Bancroft

Year 2  -  Daniel Plummer

Year 3  -  Neve Duguid

Year 4  -  Alice Crowdell

Year 5  -  Cyrus Thompson

Year 6  -  Codie Franklin

Well done to all our children as I know that you made it a really difficult job for teachers to choose just one out of so many who have shown such promise, and tried hard, in many areas of the curriculum.
Winmarleigh Hall

In October our Year 6 children went on a residential visit to a centre called Winnmarleigh Hall, near Preston, in Lancashire. Accompanied by Mrs Newton, Mr Fox, Miss Barton, Miss Chapman and Miss Hutchinson the group had a terrific time. Whether they were involved in outdoor/indoor/climbing pursuits or working on projects in the computer suites the children were wonderful. They displayed the good manners, positive approach, respect and responsibility that we have come to expect from Stokes children and were regularly complimented on their great attitude by the Centre staff.

Ofsted and Section 48 Inspections

During November the school underwent an Osted inspection, this was followed in December by a Section 48 inspection.

A copy of both reports will be sent to each family on Friday 18th December.

The report will be archived on the Ofsted website: www.ofsted.gov.uk
School Intake for September 2010

If you know of anyone, in our catchment area, who has children coming up to school age (4 by the 31st August 2010 ), please ask them to contact Mrs McDonald in the school office so that relevant forms can be sent and a guided visit around the school can be arranged. The deadline for registration is early in the new year.
School Uniform

Could I thank parents for their support with regard to school uniform.  Well over 95% of our pupils are now wearing school uniform, but it has become quite noticeable that a few of our older children are still not wearing school uniform. If your son or daughter is not attending in school uniform, could we ask that they at least attend school in “school colours.” Thank you with your support with regards to this matter.

Sale of Used School Uniform

The school has a large quantity of good quality ,used school uniform that is available from the office for only 50 pence per item. Children often grow out of clothing very quickly and so many of our items are as good as new.
Meetings with Staff

The staff at Stokes pride themselves in being available for parents to discuss any concerns or issues, as we feel the sooner we know about an issue, the sooner it can be sorted out.

However, could we just point out that first thing in the morning is often the most difficult time for staff to spend with parents. There are all sorts of pressures as the morning begins and the children have to be our first priority.

If you have something that is urgent, then obviously you will need to speak with a member of staff first thing in the morning, but if it is something that could wait until the end of the day, please arrange a meeting with the member of staff concerned.

Thank you!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
