I was so scared when it all happened! It was a life changing experience. I was only 11, I've lived there for about a month and I haven't made any friends yet, except my brother, which I normally play with. We had a hard time fitting in and we really missed our parents. It all started when I was with my brother, James, in our evacuated home. We were so lucky that the people brought the both of us home. We were playing in the beautiful garden when James accidentally threw the ball over the fence. He called me over and we both saw a small hole in the fence. I had a pleasing idea.

We climbed through the hole in the corner and found ourselves in the woods. We walked further into the dark and damp woods trying to find the ball but no luck. "We better get back home," I said. I looked around.
"Where is ... home?" asked James with a worried voice.
My heart was throbbing. We both stepped forward trying to find an explanation.
"I think we're lost." I said calmly, although I felt like crying inside. My hands were sweaty and my stomach felt empty. I was in shock; I couldn't think properly.
"Lottie, are we going to be okay?" asked James.
I replied, "I don't know, I really don't know."

It started to get darker and darker every minute. We both got really chilly so we got some wood and made a fire. It soon became quite late, we both decided to go to sleep - considering how dark it was.

I couldn't fall asleep. I was too anxious; all I could think of was how we could have got lost in the first place! James couldn't sleep either. We were both tired and hungry. We really missed our parents - they would always comfort us.

The light was so bright, it could blind me. It was morning. I sat up feeling a rumble in my tummy. I stretched my arms and frowned - I was exhausted. I turned around to wake James up. He was sleeping so calmly; I honestly didn't know how he managed to sleep. "Wake up, James!" I said. I shook his shoulder lightly. He sat up with a face showing no emotion. James crossed his legs.
"Morning," he whispered. I smiled.
"How did you sleep?" asked James.
"Not very well," I replied.
"Should we look for some food?" I asked.
"Sure, what about there, that apple tree?" he said with a starved voice and pointed to the tree. I nodded.

We started picking apples and stuffing them in our pockets. I took a bite of the delicious, bright red apple. "Yum." We started chatting about how much we missed our parents, and how we would fit in here.
"Shh, I can hear something!" I said. I looked up into the sky.
"There's a plane." I shouted. "HELP!" I screamed. James did too. "I think they saw us," I exclaimed.
We waved our hands and jumped about to make sure they could see us.

I heard a loud crash in the distance.
"What was that?" I asked. My heart started beating really fast. There was another crash, even louder than the first one.
"What's going on?" James asked, feeling as scared as ever. We stared through the trees, trying to work out where the noise was coming from. Another crash was heard. We were both really puzzled. More and more noise, each time getting closer. Whatever it was, it was coming closer.
"James, Run!" I screamed. I held his hand to make him run faster. We kept on running as fast as possible but we didn't even know where we were going and what we were running from! His hand slipped out of mine. I turned around to see where he was. James was lying on the floor, with a few cuts and bruises, weeping. I ran over to him, trying to pick him up.

"Lottie, I can't run any faster," he said. I was sensing that he was hurt. I dragged him behind an enormous tree, trying to keep us both safe. I covered my ears; James did the same. The noise started to fade away. I took my hands away from my ears. The noise disappeared.
"I think that was a bomb," I said quietly.
James just replied with a "Yeah." I was still in shock. My mouth was dry for words. I wiped the sweat off my face with a sigh of relief.
"Lets get back." I said. James nodded.

We arrived to our 'camp.' I sat on the floor that was covered with leaves and leaned onto the tree. James sat opposite me.
"I miss Mum," he said, staring at me with puppy dog eyes.
"I know, me too." I replied. I stood up and went to the bag with the apples we picked earlier. They looked so bright and juicy. I picked one up and took a bite of it. "Can I have one too?" James asked. I picked one up and passed it to him.

I suddenly heard some footsteps coming nearer and nearer. I wonder who it is. Could it be an animal, or a German? I was afraid. Could this thing be dangerous? James heard it too. We both stood there waiting to see what it could be. I started to bite my nails. I always bit my nails when I was nervous.
James whispered, "What is it?"
I shook my head meaning to be quiet. The footsteps got louder now. They were just a few metres away. I stepped back just in case.

"Hello!" said the person that appeared from behind the tree. I pinched my hand to make sure I wasn't dreaming. James replied, "Hi."
My eyes widened. She was a rather old woman wearing a long skirt, a blouse, and a rain coat. Her hair was made into a bun and she had glasses.
"What are you doing here, children?" she asked. "Oh my manners, I'm called Rose. I was just picking apples from the tree." she said.
"We're James and Lottie; we got lost here" James said feeling quite happy.
"Oh, do you want to come to my house, have a cup of tea? I can drop you off at your house." she exclaimed.
I nodded. We started to stroll along behind her.

We finally arrived at her enormous home. It was about twice the size as our evacuee home. She opened the wooden door and invited us in.
"Follow me" she said. Rose showed us into her kitchen. We sat on the table that had a floral cloth placed onto it. Her kitchen was as big as both of mine and James' rooms put together! We waited for the kettle to boil. Rose poured the hot water into the cup and dropped the tea bag in. We picked up the tea and took a sip. It was so warm and delicious. The mint tasted perfect.
"Thank you," said James. He was smiling ever since we got here.
"Well, I'd better get you two home!" said Rose, loudly. I nodded. "We live with the Smith's" I said. She smiled. Rose stood up and led us to the door. James opened it. We started to walk through the village. James and Rose started talking while I was just thinking. I was so happy that we got out of the woods; I wasn't planning on telling anyone about what happened though.

"We're here." James said. I opened the iron gate and walked to our red front door. Rose and James followed me. She knocked on the door and whistled 'London bridge is falling down' while she waited for someone to open the door.

A click was heard from the lock and someone turned the door knob. The door screeched and was opened.
"Oh my." said Heather, our evacuee mother. She hugged each of us and we ran up the stairs to our room while she chatted to Rose.

That was the story of my amazing adventure. It was super cool but terrifying. I will never forget about this experience. James and I haven't told anyone about what happened yet and probably never will.
