Street Child   Street child does something amazing. Berlie Doherty describes the unfortunate events faced by the young Victorian child Jim Jarvis. This is no dry history lesson, but an adventure to the underbelly of monsters, heroes, comedy and tragedy with a young boy, Jim in the starring role. This book is full of characters of who ruin his journey of survival, such as; the grimy Nick, Rosie’s Grandfather and the stick man. There are also good characters in his book who help him in many ways, giving him food and shelter, which is really one of the only things he needs. There many interesting characters, such as Rosie, Doctor Barnardo, as well as many more who are introduced as you ravel with Jim on his exciting adventure. While Jim is faces the scaring docklands in London, he meets his terrifying owner, Grimy Nick, after he escapes the workhouse . You won’t be able to put this book down, as I discovered when I was reading it! It felt important reading Jim’s story, making me realise how many untold stories are out there about poor children in the Victorian Era! What do you think? Definitely recommended!
