What an amazing day!
As a grand finale to our Year 6 Connecting Classrooms Zero Hunger project, we invited our MP, Jon Ashworth, to attend our assembly in order to receive the donation of foodstuffs that the children had collected for the Highfields Centre/Rahma Mercy food bank. He also spent time with our children in Year 6 to answer questions arising from their research into global hunger.
It was great to also include as a guest, John Rolfe MBE from the British Council in London who was delighted to see the impact that the British Council Connecting Classrooms project was having in school.
In the morning, it was a pleasure to welcome Simone Connoll from the food charity FareShare and Michelle Bradshaw and Alkesh Davda from our local Tesco store to talk to the children about how they are working together to reduce food waste and support local charities to feed people in need.
The children's presentation was fantastic and their questions clear and insightful. We have asked Jon to raise the issue in parliament asking how the UK plans to meet the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition targets by 2025 in order to end hunger.
Huge thanks to everyone involved in making today such a wonderful success - particularly to one of our parents, Ben Brown, who organised and facilitated all of our visitors.
