Spring Term 2018 Curriculum Information

Year 5

We will be covering these text types:

Newspaper Reports

Non-fiction Texts

At the beginning of the new term, our work will be based around text and video of Tim

Peake's Principia Mission to the International Space Centre. We will research this

historical event and write our own newspaper reports about it.

We will then read and base our learning around the novel, Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce and it will link to our Science topic - Earth in Space. We will finish the term focusing on the film,

Pandora and this will inspire our imagination to create our own planets which we will write about in the style of a non-fiction text.

We will continue to develop our knowledge and use of the Spelling and Grammar required for Year 5 following the Oxford Owl Read Write Inc Scheme.

Our shared and guided reading sessions will focus on Space themed texts. The children will be encouraged to read different text types, both in school and at home. Supporting you child to learn the 'tricky' words from the Year 5/6 word list would be a good use of homework time.

We will continue to follow the Abacus Maths Scheme. The focus will be on working with bigger numbers and working with decimals. We will be solving problems involving money, looking at properties of triangles and quadrilaterals, converting measures, mixed numbers and improper fractions. We will be using and applying all our maths knowledge and skills by solving word problems. Please continue to encourage and support your child to learn their times tables at home.
