World War 2 started in 1939 and ended in 1945. Over 60 million people died during the war including over 40 million civilians this included children.    

Britain's allies included France, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, India, the Soviet Union, China and the United States of America

Germany's allies included Italy and Japan



                                                                           
The War

1840 Germany lead by Hitler invaded Poland,
1840 Great Britain and France declared war on although there wasn't a lot of fighting at first.
1940 Germany invaded Norway and
Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, and France
1941 Germany invaded the Soviet Union.
1941 the Soviet Union was on the side of the
Allies.

Three Fronts

1941 Germany controled most of Europe.

They had tried to take over Great Britain in 1940 with the Battle of Britain, but failed. Germany's army was stretched thin and was fighting on three fronts:
1. Eastern or Russian Front
2. Mediterranean Front and Africa
3. Western Front (France and Great Britain)

The Allies Start to Fight Back

1942  the Allies began to fight back.

The British Air Force began to bomb Germany.

1943 The Allies also took control of northern Africa and then launched an attack on Italy

The Russians also defeated the German  on the Eastern Front and started to push them back towards Germany.





End of World War II in Europe


1944 the Allies attacked the Germans on the Western Front. This day is called D-Day  and pushed them out of France.

Germany then fourt back, the Battled of the Bulge, but were finally defeated.

On May 7, 1945 Germany surrendered to the Western Allies.

 
In 1939 Germany invaded and occupied Poland. Britain and its allies were not happy about this and this is why WWII began.

In Europe
Japan wanted to become a strong country and a world leader . Japan was a small island country, they had to import many natural resources. The Japaneese  leader Hideki Tojo felt they needed to  have more land by conquering other countries.





In 1937 Japan invaded China. They wanted to be in charge of all of Southeast Asia. Japan joined the Axis alliance in 1940. 1941 Japan attacked the US Navy at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. This attack on Pearl Harbor made the Americans join the Allied powers, making them stronger.

The War

The Japanese where winning the war in Southeast Asia until June 1942 when the US won a critical battle called the Battle of Midway, the US Navy sunk four Japanese aircraft carriers and forced the Japanese to retreat. Winning this battle gave the Americans cause for hope and was a turning point in the war in the Pacific.

There were many battles over islands in the South Pacific, these included Tarawa, Saipan, and Iwo Jima. Iwo Jima took 36 days of fighting to take the island.

The Atomic Bomb

In 1945 the Japanese army had been pushed
back to Japan. Although the Japanese would
not surrender. American leaders felt that the only way to get Japan to use a new weapon called the atomic bomb. The first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945. It completely destroyed the city and killed thousands of people including children.  Then another atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. The Japanese surrender on August 15, 1945.

Was a coal miner, this was an essential job therefore he was not called up to fight the Germans. The coal he main was just in factory’s to make tanks.

Was only 16 and drove lorries in the UK for the Amy
Alfred family all died during the blitz in London, after their Anderson shelter had a direct hit. All his family were in the shelter, mum, dad, brothers, sister and grandparents.
