The Death Bringer

SLAM! The door banged shut and in ran David Barrow shouting he had found a dead body! He clutched a body-bag closely to his chest and claimed to have found his best mate Jack Spud!

David Barrow, thought hard about who he should invite to Jack’s funeral, he had decided on 3 of his school friends since Jack didn’t have any family. Jack was an orphan because his mother had died giving birth to him and his father died when Jack was three. The 3 school friends were going to be Ryan West, Sam Smith and Greg Baker; it would be a nice quiet funeral. It was being held on the island of St Mary in the Isle of Scilly, where Jack and his friends had gone to school and grown up, before leaving the island to lead new lives in England. David was going to lead the funeral as vicar.

It was two days until the funeral when Ryan, Sam and Greg arrived. They had never been friendly with old Spuddy, to tell the truth they had been the opposite of friendly, but a free excuse for a holiday had persuaded them. Sam was staying at hotel Mary, Ryan was staying with family who lived on the island and Greg, the richest of the three men was renting a small flat.

Lucy sighed, it was nice to have a break from solving crime once in a while and she felt she needed one. She had not wanted to travel far incase a master crime sprung up all of a sudden and she was needed. The small island of St Mary was the perfect location, close to home, plenty to do, lots of nice towns and beaches! It was going to be great, providing a crime didn’t pop up it would be peaceful! “Peaceful,” Lucy sighed contently.

“AHHHH” Lucy woke with a start at hearing the scream, she strained her ears but all was quiet, it was pitch dark and night time, was it a dream or not. Lucy shivered at the or not as she imagined someone dieing and screaming in pain. Little did she know that the death bringer had been at work!

“And our top story today, Ryan West, the thirty year old male was murdered last night while he slept at his parents home on the Isle of St Mary. He was shot in the    back and screamed just before dieing, as local residents heard the scream.” The news reporter stopped.
“I heard that scream!” Lucy exclaimed.

This is the picture found on the wall was a scull and crossbones with the words The Death Bringer, the paintbrush used was left, so was the gun used but there were no fingerprints.” He then went onto an interview with Ryan’s parents.
Lucy sat and thought, she did a lot of thinking for a 24 year old, but she was a detective!

An hour later Lucy set off to the house where the crime was committed, she had worked as a detective for the police once before and she knew if she showed them her police card they would let her in and she could get to work solving this crime. She arrived after fifteen minutes of walking she arrived at the crime scene, as she expected the police let her in when they saw her card and she started asking questions, she asked about what the police had found out so far and questioned Ryan’s parents. His mum, Mrs West was on the phone when the crime was committed and had proof she couldn’t have done it but the dad was out and there was no proof what times he was at the pub for. Lucy scribbled down eagerly, only pausing to ask questions before she finally stopped and looked around the room, it was a study, but they had put a camp bed in the room. The camp bed was covered in blood. She examined the gun and the paintbrush before finally examining the words on the wall. “Hmm, very interesting, I fear we are experiencing the first kill of a serial killer.” Lucy spoke in a thoughtful voice “I will go home and examine the evidence I now have in my notebook.” Then, Lucy left.

“I have found all the information the police have found about Ryan and it turns out he went to school here and then moved to England. He returned to the island because he was invited to a funeral here, the funeral of Jack Spud.” Lucy then paused as the police sergeant on the other side of the phone line asked weather they should isolate the island.
“I fear we shall have to, please warn everyone to lock doors and windows, I have a feeling that The Death Bringer may strike again, tonight!” The phone line on the other side went dead and Lucy reluctantly put down the phone. What the Death Bringer didn’t expect was the great mind of Lucy Jones, thought Lucy.

“It’s a day before the funeral,” exclaimed David, “And one of the guests invited is dead! We shall have to invite someone else instead.” He sat and thought "Hmm, what about Jacob Taylor?”

One phone call later and it was done, Jacob would arrive this afternoon and stay at hotel Mary like Sam. There would be three guests once again. Sorted, now I can worry about poor, poor Ryan!

That evening Lucy Jones sat down and thought, she was a deep thinker and did not like being disturbed. AS the doorbell rang she sighed and reminded herself to be careful incase she let the Death Bringer in. “Who’s there?”
“It’s the manager of hotel Mary.”
“And what are you doing here?” Lucy asked
“You must come quickly; Sam Smith has been murdered by the Death Bringer.” The manager whispered, as if he was afraid to say the name The Death Bringer.
“Just as I feared, I will come immediately, are the police on their way?” Lucy asked taking matters as her responsibility.
“Yes, they isolated the island as soon as we told them, they hadn’t decided weather to isolate the island or not but now they’ve made up their mind.”
The manager opened his car and Lucy got in. It would be a short drive but Lucy knew she needed to think, quick.

“Miss Jones, do you have any idea of who the Death Bringer is?” Te chief of police asked.
“Yes, but first could you tell me more about this Jack Spud who the two victims were here to attend his funeral.” Lucy asked, to the surprise of the chief of police. As he started to type up Lucy’s request.

"Excuse me Mr Barrow, I am a journalist and I am writing a report about funerals to get a promotion, could you possibly let me sit at the back of this funeral making notes?" Lucy asked.
"Erm, erm," Stuttered David Barrow. Lucy raised her eyebrows knowingly before looking away grinning.
"I wouldn't talk or disturb the funeral in any way." Lucy replied innocently.
"Well I suppose so then." David agreed reluctantly. Then, the funeral began.

"Chief Warlock, I have a plan, we're going to catch this criminal once and for all, the only thing we need to do is catch him. I've worked out who he's going to try to murder next but we're going to catch him just before he does." Lucy said.
"OK, but who exactly is he going to murder next, and why?" The chief asked.
"Greg Baker, but the reason why, I will tell you after we have caught our murderer." Lucy announced. She would need the chief and two more policemen, all armed with guns and a security camera to record the scene, and she would be ready.

It was nearing night as they huddled round Greg’s bedroom, there was a fake body on the bed, as soon as the death bringer had shot at the body they would arrest him, if he turned out dangerous then they had a tranquilizer they could shoot at him. This plan could not go wrong, thought Lucy. The door suddenly crept open and a masked figure crept in, before aiming his gun at the body on the bed. Then, as the figure turned to start painting his Death Bringer sign on the wall a voice spoke behind him. “Not so fast Death Bringer, I’m here to stop you once and for all.” He paused as the Death Bringer pointed his gun at him, before the Chief drew out his own gun and the other two policemen came out of their hiding places and pointed their gun at him too. The Death Bringer was besieged and outnumbered, he could not escape. BANG! The Death Bringer fired his gun at the Chief, fortunately, the Chief ducked just in time and was not hurt. The tranquilizer was fired and the Death Bringer was defeated once and for all.

Later, in court Lucy told her tale of how the Death Bringer was killing everyone who was here to attend Jack Spuds funeral. “As we all now know the Death Bringer was David Barrow killing the people attending the funeral of his so called best mate? The only things you lot don’t know is that David Barrow isn’t David Barrow, he is actually Jack Spud. He had faked his own death and had taken revenge on all his school friends who had bullied him at school by killing them, thankfully we have managed to save Greg, but we just weren’t quick enough to save everyone. Jack changed his name, you can look up David Barrow and find he changed his name. I found this out in the information I was given about Jack Spud. If you dig up the “body” of Jack Spud you will find it is a fake body.” AS Lucy finished the judge decided that David Barrow would be hung, just as soon as they checked that he had changed his name and that the body was a fake.
