Cleopatra!
Born: 69 BC
Died: August 30, 30 BC
Best known for: The last pharaoh of Ancient Egypt

Cleopatra was the most famous female pharaoh throughout the Egyptian era and is still known today for her atrocious acts. Cleopatra’s full name was, Cleopatra VII Philopator.

When Cleopatra was eighteen years old her father died. He left the throne to her and her younger brother, Ptolemy VIII. Cleopatra and her ten-year-old brother were married and ruled Egypt together. Because she was much older, Cleopatra quickly took the role as the main ruler of Egypt. However, as her brother grew older he began to want more and more power. Eventually, he forced Cleopatra away from the palace and took over as Pharaoh alone.

But Cleo wasn't happy with that, she wanted to rule with Ptolemy or without. So...
she murdered him and regained her throne by drowning him in the River Nile.

When the Roman legion fought Egypt she formed a relationship with the Roman ruler, Julius Ceasar and they had a son called, Caesarion. The link between Rome and Egypt made Cleopatra’s reign much, much stronger.

When Ceasar died, Cleopatra and Mark Antony
then had a relationship and had three children.
Unfortunately, Mark Antony’s troops were defeated
by Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus at the Battle of
Actium and because of this defeat, Cleopatra's rein
with Mark Antony ceased. They both committed suicide.
She was only 39. Many people think that Cleopatra killed herself
by allowing a type of poisonous snake called an asp to bite her.

Cleopatra is often shown to be beautiful in movies, books and plays. However, historians have found statues and coins that show her with a long, hooked nose and a man-like face. Perhaps Cleopatra wasn’t actually as feminine as the legends suggest?

It is often said that Cleopatra bathed in milk in order to preserve her skin and keep her looking young. Again, it is uncertain whether or not this actually happened. Cleo is also famous for her glamorous and distinctive hair style and her black lined eyes. The eye liner was made of a poisonous lead, so it could also of killed her.

Whenever I think of the name Cleopatra, only one person comes to mind. However, there were actually six other Cleopatras before her time.

As you can see there is a lot of uncertainty around Cleopatra's life
and how she died, maybe it was from an asp’s bite, maybe it was lead
poisoning. It remains a mystery. However, one thing is for sure
her reputation as a pharaoh and her dramatic life still remains
important as her story is told on horrible histories and in many books.
