Once upon a time, in the city of Dundee, there was a kind farmer who lived in the area now known as Strathmartine. He had nine beautiful daughters, known as the Nine Maidens. The family lived happily on their farm, and the daughters loved to help their father with his work.
One sunny day, the farmer asked his eldest daughter to fetch water from a well near the farm. She happily agreed and set off with her bucket. But as time passed, she didn't return. The farmer grew worried and sent his second daughter to check on her sister. She too didn't come back.
One by one, the farmer sent each of his daughters to the well, but none of them returned. The farmer was very worried and decided to go to the well himself. When he arrived, he saw a terrible sight—a fearsome dragon had captured his daughters!
The farmer ran back to the village and told everyone what had happened. The villagers were shocked and scared, but a brave young man named Martin stepped forward. Martin was a blacksmith and very strong. He promised to save the Nine Maidens and defeat the dragon.
Martin gathered his tools and set off towards the well. When he arrived, he saw the dragon sleeping near the well. Martin quietly approached and, with all his strength, struck the dragon with his hammer. The dragon roared in pain and tried to fight back, but Martin was too quick and strong. He struck the dragon again and again until it was defeated.
The villagers cheered and celebrated Martin's bravery. The Nine Maidens were saved, and they all returned home safely. The place where Martin defeated the dragon was named Strathmartine, in honour of his heroic deed
