Diary Entry:
Search and rescue team alpha
Location: somewhere under the Badlands , the south.
Day 14
We followed the footprints and entered the caves at noon. The suns were high in sky , but the bright light soon disappeared as we made our way into the caves. My word its dark in here! It turned out that cave system is large and extensive, much larger than we had expected.
We were resolved to trek onwards though. We spent the first ‘day’ shuffling and climbing our way through the network of natural tunnels and caverns.
There is no natural light down here , and we have had to rely on our torches that should last us for our journey…I hope . In the first cavern we passed we encountered a species of bioluminescent plant that lit up the dark craven with an eerie glow. We took some of it with us to save the batteries on our torches.

Even with our meagre sources of light, it is bitterly dark down here. Even as I write this I am surrounded by the ever present darkness that surrounds us, a blackness I have never seen the like of before. It is like some ozzing beast that follows us, constantly fighting with the light – neither victorious, neither wholly defeated.
We eventually stopped for the day (I say ‘day’, but there is no natural light and we have to use our watches to mark the passage of time) in a small ‘chamber’ that had a natural spring dribbling through it.
We built a fire from some wood that we had brought with us from the surface and prepared a refreshing, yet tasteless meal. As I settled in for the ‘night ‘ I noticed some marks on a shattered rock nearby that our fire had illuminated. They are more than just random mark but more like carvings made directly into the solid rock. Judging by their wear and tear they looked old. I made some drawings for later reference and felt uneasy as I tried to get some sleep…
