Carnival in Malta

Carnival has been celebrated since 1535, under the rule of Grand Master Piero de Ponte.

It is celebrated during the week leading to Ash Wednesday.

People usually wear masks,colourful costumes, party and parade.

It all started in Birgu.

There was a time were women were prohibited to wear a mask.

Nowadays the largest Carnival is held in Valletta and Floriana. The Nadur Carnival is also very popular.

The most famous food during this period is Perlini and Prinjolata.
