Hurricanes- Staying Safe
What should I do if a warning is given?
When signs of an approaching hurricane are reported, you should cover all glass windows and doors with boards. Stock up on supplies, and make sure you know where your nearest hurricane shelter is. It's a good idea to fill your car (if you have one) with petrol, too, because you might be asked to leave at any moment.

What essentials will you need to survive through the hurricane?
Bottled Water . Flashlight . Radio & Batteries . Matches . Spoons . Can-opener . Sleeping bags/Blankets .
I couldn't get out in time- what do I do?
Stay calm, and don't try to leave the house. Stay away from windows and doors, and fill containers with drinking water while you still have a water supply. Unplug small electrical appliances, and put any important documents or photos in waterproof containers. If everything goes clam outside and the storm appears to be over, stay put and don't go outside. This means the eye of the storm is passing- the calm section in the middle of a hurricane. Either side of the eye are the strongest winds, so don't be fooled.
What happens when the storm has passed?
The danger isn't over yet. There will be lots of damage, and the streets could still be flooded. Fallen power lines could be extremely dangerous, and even kill someone. Water won't be drinkable until it's been purified. It will take a while to get back to normal, but the number of deaths is less than it was a few years ago. Just follow the government's advice, and you should be able to stay safe.
