BATTLE OF BRITAIN

  • Battle of Britain was one of the most significant battles in World War II. The Battle began on July 10th, 1940, and lasted many months.
  • At that time, Germany wanted to invade the world, and had already taken over most of Europe, including France.
  • This battle was named the Battle of Britain following a speech made by Winston Churchill, who was the prime minister of Britain.
  • It was the first large campaign fought only by air forces, and was Germany's first major defeat in the Second World War
  • The casualties came to 500 British airmen, 2600 German pilot and 60,000 civilians.
  • The battle was won in large in large part because Britain was producing at least twice as many planes as Germany could.
  • In July 1940, Britain produced 496 new fighters. 8
