Titanic Stories: Shipbuilding
Back in 1910, the Titanic began to be built in the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast.
It took 3000 men two years to build the most impressive, luxurious and largest moveable man-man object the world had ever seen - and was considered to be unsinkable.
The Titanic was a feat of engineering unlike anything the world had ever seen at the time.
It was 269 metres long, 28 metres wide and more than 53 meters tall, which is the same height as Belfast City Hall.
It had ten decks, three engines and its furnaces burnt through over 600 tonnes of coal. 175 'firemen' shovelled the coal by hand and worked in shifts 24 hours a day.
Although Titanic had four funnels, only three were functional - the fourth one was just for show.
