Galileo Galilei was born on the 15th February 1564 in Pisa, Italy. He became an astronomer, a physicist and mathematician. He is known as the father of modern science, the father of observational astronomy, the father of modern physics and the father of the scientific method. Early in the 1600, he studied the moon and learnt that the moon is not smooth but covered with craters and mountains. Galileo also studied the sun and learnt that it was also not smooth but covered with dark areas called sunspots and that the sun was rotating. He also disagreed with the old belief that the earth was in the middle of the solar system, instead he believed that the sun was in the centre of the solar system and was orbited by the earth and the other planets. Galileo died on the 8th January 1642 while he was under house arrest because he disagreed with the catholic church about what he believed in. Nowadays he is recognised as an important astronomer and scientist.
