What are fossils?

Fossils are the remains of ancient animals and plants, the traces or impression of living things from past geologic ages or the traces of their activities. Fossils are found on every continent on Earth. Over time, more mud presses down on the remains. Minerals dissolved in the mud turns the remains to stone. These remains are called fossils and they give scientists clues about what life was on planet.

Where are fossils found?

Fossils are usually found in sedimentary rocks, which formed near prehistoric rivers. They are also found buried underground, but some are revealed when wind or rain removes a thin layer of dirt. Mary Anning discovered many fossils that had been revealed by landslides. Many fossils are of shells, bones, or teeth that have been turned to stone by a process called petrification.
