A German soldier starts singing silent night in German. Then some English soldiers join in. Many more soldiers join in and soon the two enemies are singing carols together. All night long their voices echoed across the empty landscape.

25th December 1914...

The next day dawned bright and early over France. There was a sheet of pure white snow across No Man's Land. Then an English soldier surrendered and stepped out of his trench, then so did a German. Soon many soldiers were out of their trenches, exchanging presents, playing card games, giving each other haircuts, trading rations and having burial services. They even played a game of football,

which Germany won 3-2.
