Step 1 : First, the Roman soldiers marked a straight line .

Step 2 : The soldiers dug down one meter .

Step 3 : The Roman soldiers covered the road with big stones, then they put smaller stones on top of the big stones .

Step 4 : Sometimes they put flat stones on top.

Step 5 : The top of the road was curved so the rainwater runs off into the ditches .
