WW2 recipe

We made a WW2 recipe cottage pie

using all of the rations. The ingredients we used were things like basic amounts of onions, carrots peas, potatoes and mince.

When we tasted the cottage pie, we found it was very salty. The amount we made had 1 lb of mince which would be two people's amount of mince for a week.

Ingredients

1 lb of mince (a week's ration of mince beef for one person would be about 1/2 lb)

several large potatoes

2 oz cheese

dried herbs (rosemary and thyme work well)

salt and pepper

beef stock cube (1 pint or more)

gravy powder

peas and finely chopped carrots and optional onions

blob of butter or margarine

Method:

First, brown the mince and then cut the vegetables into small chunks. Then add some salt and pepper and herbs to add some flavour. Next, add the beef stock and stirred it for around 15 minutes in cold water until it turns into paste. Meanwhile, cut the potatoes into small chunks and place them in salted hot water. After that, mash the potatoes with generous amounts of butter or margarine. Then, slowly pour in some milk to make the mash spreadable.

Place the mince into a small baking tray with deep sides. Carefully, spread or pipe the mash potato on to the top of the mince. After that, gently sprinkle a small amount of cheese on to the top of the potato. Finally, to finish your cottage pie, place it in the oven for 20 minutes.
