Home Life

During the war, life at home was a lot harder. Taxes went up to pay for the war cost and food was rationed as a way of sharing food fairly and to stop panic buying. If your husband, father, brother or other relation went to war there was a constant fear they would be killed. Sometimes soldiers wrote letters home to their families but when the Officers found someone missing they would report back to the family and he could be dead.

Lots of food was sent away to feed the soldiers fighting in the war. There was also less food arriving from other countries because ships bringing supplies were often attacked by German submarines called U-boats.Food became very expensive. People panicked and soon there were very long queues outside shops.

Rations

In 1918, the government introduced rationing, a way of sharing food fairly. Sugar, meat, flour, butter, margarine and milk were all rationed so that everyone got what they needed. Each person had special ration cards.

Authorities started encouraging people to grow their own food. Also plots and allotments were made in parks and other public lands for the growing of food and people were encouraged to not throw away as much as possible.
