Captain Robert Falcon Scott

Robert Falcon Scott was born 6th June 1868 in Plymouth and was a naval officer/explorer. He was the first man in the Antarctic and the name of the ship was the "Discovery" which set sail in 1901 and came back in 1903. There was a lot of trouble during the expedition however, this wasn't anything compared to his next expedition when he tried to claim the South pole for Great Britain.

He started another expedition on a ship named the "Terra Nova" which meant new land. It was from 1910-1914. The trip was ill fated and nobody survived. The trip started out as just a trip to the Antarctic but the animals couldn't cope. The conditions were harsh. Because of this the group with dogs had to go back leaving Scott and his team to face the ascent. By January 1912, only five remained. They were: Scott, Wilson, Oates, Bowers and Evans. When they arrived(in the 12th of January), they were demoralised to find that a Norwegian party led by Roald Amundsen beat them. Scott failed his country.

He started the 1500km to get back. It was long and treacherous and it ended up in death. Evans died in mid-February and knowing he was holding back his companions, because he had frostbite, Oates walked out and was never seen again. On March 1912, the three died of starvation only 20km from a pre-arranged supply depot! Their bodies were found in a tent with Scott's diary.
