THE SHIP
- It was a very large ship, 61m in length.
- It had an armoured knight with a silver chest plate on it which is now in the Oceanography centre and the only part of this ship left.
- It was made in England in February 1858
- It was made of wood.
- In 1870 it will start its trip around the world.
- 15 of the ships 17 guns were removed for laboratories and workrooms ready for the journey
THE JOURNEY
- The captain was called George Nares
- He had a crew of 200 men.
- The journey started on 7th December 1872.
- The journey had no less than 362 stops over 127,000km
- 3.5 years long
- Lots and lots of information was found during this time which has helped us in the future.
- Journey ended in May 1876 in the UK.
HOW THE HMS CHALLENGER HAS HELPED US
- Found lots of new animals on the journey, lots of these are in museums around the world.
- The information they found is still used in researching today.
- Their information showed us the effect of climate change on the ocean.
- Recorded the scale of the Mariana Trench.
- Recorded how big the Pacific Chasm is.
