Nelson Mandela was the first black president of South Africa. He was born on the 18th July 1918. He was given the name 'Nelson' by a teacher at school because she didn't like pronouncing black people's names. His real name was 'Rolihlahla'.

When Nelson's family found him a wife, he refused and left to become a lawyer.

Nelson Mandela fought against a bad government. He was sent to prison for 27 years, because he wanted black and white people to be together. He was in prison from 1962 to 1990. His prison was in Robben Island and had to do hard labour.


During Apartheid, whites and non whites lived seperately

He became South Africa's first black prime minister. Nelson retired from Government in 1999. He died on 5th December 2013 due to lung problems.

Nelson Mandela is important because he fixed some of South Africa's problems. His message was important as it stops us from making the same mistakes.
He fought for people's rights.
