Introduction

One of Penboyr’s School aims and objectives is in preparing pupils for the adult world is:

‘To enable each child to grow and to participate fully in a society where both Welsh and English are used as a means of communication.’

A high percentage of our pupils (70%) are from English speaking background, therefore, it is our responsibility to ensure that our pupils speak Welsh within the classroom and on the yard, so that they are confident to speak the language in the wider community.

Following our Estyn Inspection in September 2015, one of the recommendations was to ‘Strengthen provision for developing pupils’ oracy skills in order to ensure their regular use of the Welsh language’, which is one of our priorities in our School Development Plan for 2016-1017. In response to the recommendation, the school decided to adopt and implement Carmarthenshire County Councils Welsh Charter Scheme.

The charter’s main aim is to increase children’s social use of the Welsh language and to inspire and encourage children and the youth to use the Welsh language in all aspects of their life. We require support from the community, the school, the school council, pupils, parents, governors and the wider community for it to succeed.

In September 2016, the school commenced its journey towards our bronze award with the help of Pedr Penboyr. We kindly ask you as parents, governors and pupils to join us on this important journey.
