Women at work and play during World War II
By Kian
During World War II (1939-1945) the war changed the world of work for women in
Great Britain and the United States of America (USA). As men went to war,
women began to fill their jobs in areas such as making bombs, building ships,
being plumbers, mechanics and driving fire engines.
Women were called up to work by the British government in 1941. Many women
became involved with up to 640,000 in the armed forces and 80,000 in the land
army, which was started in 1939.
The women in the land army worked very long hours, ploughing fields, harvesting
crops and farming animals.
