Women in the USA who did traditional mens jobs during the war became known as "Rosies".

Rosie the Riveter became a cultural icon and inspired lots of women to go to work.

Similar images appeared in Britain and government posters encouraged

women to do men's jobs while they went to war.

Even Queen Elizabeth joined the land army as a young woman,

as the men went to war, in the Army, Royal Air Force and the Navy.

During the war women's football became popular as men went away to war

and large factories had women football teams. Lily Parr is the greatest

goal scorer in English history. She scored more than a thousand goals for

her club between 1920- 1951. The legacy of women's football during

both World Wars is still largely forgotten..

Women' s football during the war

As well as playing football, women did other interesting and fun things along

the journey during the war. For instance Joy Lofthouse flew Spitfires and

bombers for the Air Transport Auxiliary during World war II. She was one of

only 164 female pilots, known as the Attagirls who flew aircraft from factory to

airfield.

Rosie the Riveter still inspires women today with her image of

toughness, teamwork and the we can do it attitude.

Even Beyonce was inspired by the Rosie the Riveter

image of courage and determination.

On 15th August, 2015, 1,084 boiler- suited women and girls

gathered at the World War II home front national park in California

to celebrate Rosie the Riveter as America's iconic female war

worker.

Women during the Blitz

During the Blitz on London women in voluntary organisations

did a very important job. The Women's Voluntary Service

provided firefighters with tea and refreshments when the

clear up took place after a bombing raid.

Most were quite elderly as the younger women were in the

factories or working on farms and were too exhausted to do

extra work.

Conclusion

I think that this project educated me about the history of women's lives

during the War. It surprised me that a woman named Lilly Parr is the

greatest goal scorer in English history. Also it inspired me to know of the

determination and bravery of the Atta girls who helped to save this country

and also the women who helped during the Blitz.

These women who were so brave have left us a fantastic legacy that we

should be proud of forever.
