Arctic Animals
one of the is known animals is a polar bear! Most people think tat they are cuddly and calm animals but they can be vicious and deadly! But yes, they are very caring to their cubs.
Polar bears are also endangered due to climate change. Climate change is the world warming up. When the temperatures get higher the ice starts to melt. This means that the homes of the polar bears could get destroyed.
Another animal that many people forget about is a narwhal. Narwhals are a type of whale. But they have a horn! The horn is actually a tooth which gradually grows out of a narwhal's upper lip.
Harp seals are also very interesting arctic animals!
They weigh 130 kg as adults! They can dive as deep as 270 meters and live in huge colonies. Harp seals eat fish and crustaceans but are also prey of killer whales and polar bears. They are also very social animals, especially in mating season and can even identify their pups by their scent.
This is a harp seal pup.
A not-so famous arctic animal is a Canada lynx.
They are carnivorous and weigh up to 8-11 kg as adults. The Canada lynx has a thick, long coat which is usually grey in winter. They eat mice, squirrels and birds and are very dependent on these animals in able to survive.
Antarctic animals
Penguins are a very famous animal! They huddle close together to stay warm. These birds are also flightless. Whilst other bird have wings to fly they have flippers to swim. But, millions of years ago they could fly but lost their ability.
A very large animal of the Antarctic are elephant seals. They weigh 8,800 pounds due to so much blubber! Also, elephant seals get their name from their trunk-like snouts. But, they can be dangerous due to them being very protective.
A very important animal that lives in the Antarctic is... krill! Krill is food for MANY animals! Without them they could die! They belong to the kingdom Animalia and come from the Norwegian word meaning 'small fry of fish'.
Another amazing animal is a Antarctic fur seal!
They weigh 84 kg as adults and are 1.6 m. Fur seals eat krill, squid, fish, fish and penguins. But, krill makes up 95% of their diet. They can reach up to 20 km per hour on land and can reach ever higher speeds when swimming. Unlike other seals their ears can be seen. They also, like the name have fur.
