Allotments

An allotment is a plot of land you rent from a local council or a private land owner that you can grow your own food on. Allotments are communal places so you rent a plot from an allotment and share utilities such as water and fertiliser with other plot owners.

Some allotment plots have restrictions (such as you can't sell the product you grow yourself). The reason for this is because the idea of an allotment is to grow food to provide for your family. Some people trade for stuff like if you grow something they don't and they grow something you don't you can swap.

Some people have half of their plot as grass and then the other half they use for vegetables. Some people use raise beds either to keep pathway weeds from your garden soil, prevent soil compaction, provide good drainage and serve as a barrier against insects such as slugs and snails.
