Victorian crime and punishment

crime and punishment changed alot during the Victorian times from 1750 people were getting extremely angry with the older punishments such as stocks, pillory and whipping so they stopped using them, why all this happened was because the people thought it was to barbaric. In replacement for those punishments transportation was used first they were sent to america then when they claimed independence all the criminals were sent to Australia they thought the fear of the unknown and so far away would stop people doing crimes.Unfortunately,it did not work because crime was higher than ever that was when prisons started.

when did prisons start? because transportation wasn't working there was a effort to make imprisonment the main punishment in britain for a long time prisoners were kept in hulks (old war ships) because they weren't being used then a prison building comony began in the years 1842 and 1877 90 prisons were built.

what were Victorian prisons like? Victorian prisons were horrible for the prisoners there life was hard and most prisoners were extremely depressed they were't aloud to talk to each other as well and they were kept alone most of the time in there cells and just to make it worse they had to do extremely hard physical work all day.

did you now all the prisoners work were point less.
