This book is based on schoolgirl Elsie Kettle, who lives with her Nan. They are happy being together, and love each other dearly, but one day, Elsie's Nan catches pulmonary tuberculosis, and is put to rest in the dreaded sanatorium. Their previous plans to see the Queen's coronation had backfired because of Nan's illness. Elsie has to be looked after by her Mum, who is usually working as a stage girl at a hotel. Elsie's Mum is mad at Nan, and is annoyed as she has to look after Elsie. She always said to Elsie when she was little, " I'd be up on stage kicking my feet up, but oh no, I'm stuck with you." Will Elsie be happy with her new life with her Mum, or will it be a different story? Find out in Jaqueline Wilson's Queenie. I would recommend this to 8 years old and above.
