Mini Monster

By Lois Molema , age 7

Far, far away in a peaceful, ancient forest just outside Guildford, there lived a mini monster called Fred. He was big and furry with huge red spots. This monster had no friends at all. He didn’t know how he got into the forest but Fred knew that he had lived there since he was 5.  He was a very lonely monster and he was desperate for some company and for somebody to be nice to him.

Meanwhile some children were heading off on a cold, winter adventure in the forest. Usually, Fred would hide himself when people came walking through because adults and dogs scared him. This time however, he saw a group of children with no adults with them. “Finally!” he thought. “A chance to make some friends.”

The children were just passing near him when Fred peeped out from behind an old oak tree and started to say, “Can you be my…’’ but they had already run away scared and frightened. They began to run all the way back to Guilford in the freezing air when Sofia, the youngest girl in the group, looked back over her shoulder and saw the monster sobbing sadly on a rusty bench. She bravely turned around and walked back towards him. When she got to Fred she noticed his big red spots and couldn’t help gently rubbing his furry tummy. The other children were staring at her speechless with frozen faces like she was an amazing robot performing in a science competition.

Through his tears, Fred started to feel his tummy move like jelly on a plate. He was incredibly ticklish but never knew it because no one had ever touched his tummy before and the sensation made him chuckle and smile.  The more Sofia rubbed his tummy, the more he started to laugh until he was rolling in the leaves.

The other children came running to join the fun. Fred on the other hand was laughing so much that he was crying too! For as long as he could remember, Fred was feeling the most happy and loved he had ever felt.

BOOM!!!!! There was an explosion of smoke and crackles, and when all the smoke cleared there was a little boy sitting on the leaves with not a sign of a monster anywhere. The children jumped back in shock, “Fred! Is that you?’’

Fred was a boy who had disappeared at school in Yr4, everyone was really sad when he vanished and no one knew where he had gone. The Queen of Doom had cast a spell on him when he was playing hide and seek in the playground but when Sofia looked in his favourite hiding place, Fred had been taken.

For four years Fred had been locked up inside this monster body but now the Queen of Doom had reversed her spell and it was time to celebrate in the forest. Fred went back to school but chose to play ‘Orange Squash’ from now on.
