GLENFIELD HOSPITAL’S CHILDREN’S HEART UNIT

This is a message from Ria Pahwa

“As you may know, the Children’s Heart Unit at Glenfield Hospital is closing down, as a result of a recommendation that there should be fewer, more concentrated areas of expertise.

Glenfield Hospital offers more than just surgery. They have pioneered and run one of the World’s leading ECMO (Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation) units. ECMO is a machine which allows patients’ hearts and lungs to rest if they are failing.

The survival rate of patients receiving ECMO at Glenfield is up to 20% better than any other centre in the whole of the UK. This means that for every ten children treated, two more survive than if they were treated somewhere else.

Andrew Lansley, (ex) Secretary of State for Health approved the decision to close the unit at Glenfield and move it to Birmingham.

I have had seven heart surgeries which Glenfield supported me through and am now a member of the Young People’s Council representing Rushey Mead, Belgrave and Latimer Wards. I am also a member of the UK Youth Parliament and a representative of all disabled children on a local and national level.

I am holding a march, this Saturday 8th September 2012 to raise awareness of the closure of the children’s heart unit at Glenfield Hospital.

We are meeting at 12.00 p.m. outside Habib Bank UK, 166-168 Belgrave Road, Leicester and then will march along Belgrave Road.

Once we have finished marching, we will meet outside Bobby’s Restaurant, who have sponsored the march and they will provide refreshments.

We will also have a table outside Bobby’s for anyone who wishes to sign the petition or give a donation on the day of the march. Anyone is welcome, we need your support. Please let everyone know.

Thank you,
