Islington Sportshall Athletics

Ashmount Primary's athletics team came away with Silver medals, narrowly being pipped to the Gold medal position by Tufnell Park. The competition which saw 20 Islington schools all compete in a variety of track and field events took place at the Sobell Centre, and on arrival the team were nervous but ready to go having prepared well over the past few weeks.

The format saw boys take to the track first in a variety of relay races and the girls participate in the field events which were vertical jump, standing triple jump, standing long jump, chest push, soft javelin and speed bounce. For each event two girls were put forward to compete and we had some good success with Hen and Laura taking third place in the chest push and the pairs of Millie and Ella, and Na’kajah and Tanya also finishing third in the speed bounce and long jump.

On the track the boys were blazing away with some excellent results. Our version of Bolt and Blake, Han and Stephane won the 2 + 2, whilst the relay team of Han, Stephane, Diago and Kayvon also recorded the quickest time of the day in the 4 x 1. After the lunch the groups swapped over with the girls on the track and boys on the field. The boys again dominated winning four of the six events. Stephane and Kayvon were victorious in the standing long jump, and Kalvin joined Stephane for the pair to win the standing triple jump. Han and Diago led the way in the vertical jump and Cory and Harry kept the momentum going winning the chest push. There was more success as Han and Kalvin came second in the speed bounce whilst Cameron and Jordan secured a third place finish in the soft javelin.

Over on the track the girls were running their hearts out with some consistent performances from all of them. So after 24 events in total for both the boys and girls it was a case of waiting for the results, and waiting! Due to the high number of schools taking part, the results could not be read out on the day, so the children were told the following morning. As they gathered together their apprehension turned to delight when they were told the result, and also how close they were to winning. The margin was 2 points which could easily have been a centimetre or a split second, in any of the events. However we were really proud of them all and with over half the team in year 5 we will be back, more experienced and ready to earn the gold spot hopefully.
