Viking longships

Design:

The longships all had unique sails and

shields. They were made of wood and

were the first ever boats to have a keel,

which is a piece of metal that runs along the

bottom of the ship. The shields measured 80-90 cm

long. They also had a snake or dragon on the front.

How they are made:

The Viking servant girls,Daughters

and wives all helped make the sail

that was made from wool, animal fat

and tar to strengthen it too.

started layering the panels by doing

the inside to the outside and then

they put the keel on the bottom.

They made them very big so 50

Vikings could fit in it.

Materials:

They used wood to build the ship(they had to use a lot of wood for the panels.) and the dragon head, metal for the keel and the shields, wool, tar and animal fat for the sail.

Key facts:

Vikings were good craftsmen.

The boats could go in shallow water.

There were 70 oars on the biggest boat and 26 on the smallest.

The shields on the side were to defend the Vikings.

We don't have ships like this anymore because we have engines.
