Poppy Field by Micheal Morpurgo

Book review by Puma36

Just after World War 1, a little girl and her grandparents lived on a farm. Next door there was a hospital for all of the sick and injured. The little girl goes to visit the sick people in hospital and asks them if they want any of her eggs from the farm. She spots a soldier who is just sitting all alone so went over to him to check that he was okay. The man explained why he was just sitting alone and writing. The man said that his friend had only died yesterday and so he was trying to write a really nice poem to put on his grave. The poems' he had wrote that weren't quite right, he would always chuck them on the ground but the little girl picked up one and kept it like a jewel. The little girl liked the poem so much, she put it in a frame and kept it in her

house. The soldier asked the girl if she wouldn't mind putting some poppies on his friends grave because he tripped over yesterday and couldn't walk properly. Once the soldier was better, he was released from hospital but unfortunately he was shot and died on the same day.

This book is quite sad so if you like sad yet informative, true books then this would be the one for you. I would rate this book a 9.5/10 because of how the writing was styled, all the great vocabulary and all the thoughts that it provoked. The age group for this book I think should be 8 to 14 years old. If you would like a World War 1 book to read, then this would be the one to go for.
