Following the stars

by Ondine Farlam

Navigating by the stars is the oldest use of astronomy, the science of the heavens. From prehistoric times, people looked to the stars to understand how to navigate, particularly at sea. The Three Wise Men followed the star to Bethlehem to see the baby Jesus.

How do you navigate by the stars?

Sailors used the stars to find their way before navigation tools

They would measure how many widths of their finger(s) it took to get from the horizon to the North Star (Polaris). Different lengths would show them their approximate position of latitude.

They used the North Star as their reference point because it is

the only star that doesn't 'change' its position in the Northern Hemisphere sky as the Earth turns.
