Recruitment

At the start of the first world war, although Britain had 30 warships and Germany had 20, Britain only had 200,000 soldiers whereas Germany had 5,000,000. Lots of recruiting posters went up all over Britain and men aged 18-38 went to recruiting offices to sign up.

Although soldiers couldn't go over seas till they were 19 many young men joined the army but they were soon to find out it wasn't all it seemed. Recruits had to be at least 5 feet 3 inches and had to pass physical tests.
