Year 3 - Telling the Time

Next term we will be working on telling the time, timetables and time related problems.

Children need to be taught to read the time. Most find this a very difficult maths skill. It takes 'time'!!!

Things you can do and talk about, to help at home over the next month.

• Look at the big/long hand which shows the hour and the small/short hand shows the minutes.
• How many minutes in an hour? How many hours in a day? How many days in a week? How many weeks in a month?
• start by reading minutes past the hour and how the long hand shows the minutes and each number goes up in 5 minutes.
• once children understand this they can look at minutes to the hour and look at intervals of 5 minutes.
• children could start to wear a watch and start telling the time through the day
