All about elephants

Elephants are the world's largest land animal! Male

African elephants can reach 3 m tall and weight

between 4,000 to 7,500 kg. Asian elephants

are slightly smaller reaching 2.7 m tall and

weighing 3,000 to 6,000 kg.The tallest elephant in

the world is 4 m 50. They are very tall! Much taller and

wider and heavier than us!

Elephants are the only animals that can snorkel

without aid. By holding the tips of their trunks

above the water's surface, elephants can traverse

rivers totally submerged. They simply walk across

the riverbed. The elephant's trunk contains over

40,000 muscles. Compare that to the human body,

which has 639 muscles and you realise how

complicated an elephant's trunk is.

Humans have a body part similar to a trunk. And

that's the tongue. Both the tongue and the trunk are

made up only of muscles. Both the tongue and the

trunk can move in lots of different directions.
