The Guardian Trip

On Wednesday 3rd July 2019, the blog team went on a trip to the Guardian Newspaper office. We created our own front cover and we were taught the process the newspaper had to go through in order for it to be published and we were taught the different roles people had at the office.

We went to the Guardian by train from Preston Road station to Kings Cross St Pancras station. When we got there we were welcomed by a kind security officer and went up the escalators to a room which was a bit like a classroom. A lovely lady called Mena Sultan told us that we will be creating our very own front page on a computer and also told us that she will print it out for us and we can take it home! We were all so excited!

First, we had to pick a partner and sit down. Secondly, we were given a range of stories to choose from and we had to pick two. Once we had picked two stories we had to click on them and lots of information and quotes will come up about it. Next we had to choose a format for our front cover. After that we were given another laptop to research about the stories we picked and then we started to write. Mena told us to remember that we needed to include quotes and high level vocabulary. Next we had pack lunch in the staff canteen.

After having lunch we had to edit our work, add pictures, add captions, put a price, think of a skyline, catchy headline, write our byline, page number and check everything again before getting ready to print.

Once we had finished editing the front cover Mena printed out our work for us so we could take it back to school and show our peers. It was an informative and interesting day, I really got a lot out of it and enjoyed it thoroughly.
