Adding ing

Rule 1

When word has a short vowel sound followed by one consonant e.g. dig (consonant, vowel, consonant or CVC) you must double the last letter (consonant)

e.g. dig -digging

put - putting

nod - nodding

put - putting

shop - shopping

Rule 2

If the vowel has a short sound but has more than one consonant after it then just add ing.

sing - singing

Rule 3

If the word ends in e - drop the e then add ing

come - coming

dance - dancing

Rule 4

Words with a long vowel sound, just add ing

e.g. break - breaking

float - floating
