Fossils

Fossils

represent

the remains or traces of once-living

organism . Most fossils are the remains of extinct organisms-

that is , they belong to plants or animals that no longer live

anywhere on Earth.

What are fossils made of ?

Fossils are formed in a number of different ways , but most are formed when a plant or animal dies in a watery environment and is buried in mud and silt . Soft tissues quickly decompose leaving the hard bones or shells behind . Over time sediments build over the top and hardens the rock .

How long does it take to become a fossil ?

Fossils are defined as the remains or traces of organisms that died more than 10,000 years ago, therefore, by definition the minimum time it takes to make a fossil is 10,000 years. But, that is just an arbitrary line in the sand – it means very little in terms of the fossilisation process.

Fossils are the preserved remains of plants or animals. Trace fossils are the remains of the activity of an animal, such as preserved track ways, footprints, fossilized egg shells, and nests. When asked what a fossil is, most people think of petrified bones or petrified wood. Per mineralization is a process.
