Viking Longships

How They Are Made

Viking longships were built

beside a river. An oak tree was

cut down to make the keel.

They started with the keel

and built outwards. The sail

was made from sheep wool

covered with animal fat

and tar to strengthen it.

Also some sails could

fold down.

At The Front Of The Boat

At the front of the boat,

they had a dragon,snake

or sea serpente to give the enemies a warning

that they were coming.

Also, it was a threat to

scare the opponent.

Key Facts

Viking longships were the

quickest boats around

back then. The smallet

longships had 26 oars and

the largest longships had

70 oars. Viking longships

could come up to the

shore which is an advantage

because they could go attack

them then if they were chased

they could jump back in the

boat and sail away.
