Numicon Ideas

Year 3 / Blwyddyn 3

During parents evening last week, some parents who have invested in Numison expressed an interest ways that you could use Numicon at home. Here are a few activities to start you all off.

1. If I only have three shapes in a bag, what is the smallest number you could make? What is the biggest number you can make? What is the smallest even number you could make?

What is the biggest odd number you could make?

2. Can all totals between 3 and 30 be made with only three shapes?

3. Using three Numicon shapes, how many ways can any number between 3 and 30 be made?

4. Find totals that can be made with consecutive numbers e.g. 3 + 4 + 5 = 12

5. Find totals that can be made using three numbers that are the same - is there a pattern in these totals?

6. If you had an unlimited supply of Numicon 3 shapes what totals could you make?

Repeat with other shapes ( 2, 5, 10, 4).

7. Can Numicon 6 and 7 shapes be laid in a line that totals 100?

8. Using the Numioson shapes from 1- 10, what totals are found when adding two consecutive numbers? Is there a pattern? Have the numbers got anything in common? Odd or even?

In addition to these, you could ask the following questions:

Addition

Can you give me 2 numbers that make 10?

Can you find a way of making 20 using 3 shapes?

Multiplication

How many 2s do you need to make 18 (or any other number in the 2 x table)? You could repeat for other shapes (3s, 4s, 5s and 10s).

I hope this is of help. Feel free to email me with any queries - poinerl3@hwbmail.net
