Mount Stewart is a Rights Respecting School

As you know, Mount Stewart strongly believes that all children have rights and follow UNICEF's UK Rights Respecting Framework. In the Infants we hold the Right Respecting Silver Award, and now we are working towards the same in the Junior School.

We are so lucky to have absolutely amazing Right Respecting Ambassadors that champion the rights for all our our children.

Sushani and Vidya explain what RRSA is and how it helps children everywhere:

RRSA is the convention of rights that was agreed by the government all across the world in 1989. It says what they must do so that children can stay healthy, can learn at school, are kept safe, have their views listened to and are treated fairly.

These rights apply to every child around the globe, no matter what their background, what language they speak or what skin colour they are (Article 2). Some of the main right are:

Article 24: right to healthy food and water.

Article 16: right to privacy.

Article 31: right to rest and play.

Article 28: right to an education.

Article 13: freedom to expression.

Article 19: right to protection from violence.

These rights help children around the world by giving them equal opportunities and allow them to be treated fairly. Article 24 and 28 are the two utmost important articles because every child deserves an education and food and water to survive.

Below, some of our fantastic ambassadors explain how Mount Stewart has helped our pupils enjoy their rights:

The Mount Stewart Schools are great communities that make sure that we enjoy all of our rights. They help us stay healthy by providing us with food, clean water and a healthy environment (article 24), they let us rest and play after all the hard work we have done in lessons (article 31) and, of course, give us a great

education (article 28). The teachers and dinner ladies have really helped us in achieving these rights. Also, us, the RRSA team, let others enjoy many other rights such as speaking to them and letting them to be heard and express their feelings (article 13).

My school helps me with my rights by placing presentations around the school and posters in the classroom. There is also a drawing in the lunch hall showing us what article 24 is. I think that our school has done a good job on teaching us about our right.
