The Titanic first set sail on April 10th, 1912 after being built by the company White Star Line, which was owned by J.P Morgan. It took 3,000 men two years to build the R.M.S Titanic, and it costed $7.5 million, but it is unknown how much it was in British pounds. After it was done being built, the Titanic was known as one of three 'Olympic Class liners', after it was commissioned by the company.

How It Happened.

As the Titanic was leaving the port, It's suction caused the ropes to snap on a nearby docked ship (The S.S New York.) Tugboats had to race to the scene to prevent the New York from colliding with the Titanic. Some people aboard the Titanic and on the dock felt this occurrence to be a bad omen.

The Iceberg

On the day of the collision, the Titanic, which was breathtakingly large, had ignored six ice warnings, because the wireless operator was already preoccupied with transmitting passenger messages. One of the other causes, was that the moon was not out. Therefore, it made the iceberg trickier to see.

Many people think that the iceberg that the Titanic hit was enormous, but it was actually half the size of the R.M.S Titanic. When the iceberg was near, many people aboard the Titanic reportedly stated that they felt like something bad was approaching. The R.M.S Carpathia sent out many signals that they passed several icebergs, along with other ships, but once again, they were ignored. Instead of listening to the messages, the captain exclaimed a message saying to stop talking and let him steer the boat.

The iceberg that the Titanic struck was unusual, because it was not white like most other icebergs, but more of a clear look caused by lots of melting because of the weather.

The Collision

The collision occured on Sunday April 14th at 11:40 PM. The watertight compartments were not actually watertight ; it was one of the reasons that the Titanic sunk so quickly, but the ship could've stayed afloat if only four compartments flooded, but since five of them flooded, it unfortunately sank.

When the Titanic was in the middle of sinking, the band on board kept playing until the boat was completely submerged. They did it to calm people down a bit, and it did, although sadly, none of the band survived after they performed that kind deed.

The Damage

The iceberg had caused so much damage, that the cost to rebuild the Titanic would cost a whopping $174,000,000, while in the olden days it would've only costed about a quarter of that. One of the main reasons that so much damage was caused, is that the captain of the ship had ordered that they reverse; if they had carried on normally, it probably wouldn't have happened.

The Titanic's oldest, and last, survivor was born on the 29th November, but had sadly died recently. The Titanic's disaster could have been prevented, but as I said, it was not, due to the ignorance of the captain aboard the ship.
